On-Site Counselling

Health and Wellness provides a range of services for students’ physical and mental health, wellness programs and information to help support students in achieving their personal and academic goals. This includes confidential, student-centred health care, including comprehensive medical care, travel education, immunization, counselling, and referrals. The multidisciplinary health team includes family physicians, registered nurses, nutritionists, support staff and a lab technician. The Temerty Faculty of Medicine has two designated counsellors who are available to meet with students on a variety of issues.

Meet our Counsellors

Laurie Coleman

Laurie Coleman (MSW, RSW) is a Wellness Counsellor and Coordinator at Health and Wellness, Student Life. Since 2011, she has been part of the on-location mental health team. She provides services for RHSE students Monday through Thursday.

Christina Ruggiero (MCP, RP) is a Wellness Counsellor and Coordinator at Health and Wellness Student Life. She has over seven years’ experience working with post-secondary student mental health, previously at York University, McMaster University, and Queens University. She provides services for RHSE students on Monday through Friday.

Description of Services

Same day (next day) single session counselling and brief counselling services can be accessed for support with a range of emotional and psychological challenges, such as difficulties with mood or anxiety, academic concerns, relationship stress, and other psychosocial issues. Services are offered in a confidential and empowering environment that is directed toward optimizing your personal, academic and overall well-being. Sessions can be accessed virtually or in-person.

How to Make an Appointment

To schedule your first appointment with a counsellor, please contact the Health and Wellness Centre at 416-978-8030 (select option “5”) or drop by Health & Wellness central office at 700 Bay Street, 12th Floor. Please identify yourself as a graduate student in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine or RHSE and you will be offered a session with Laurie or Christina. Follow-up appointments can be scheduled directly with your counsellor. Please note that Temerty Medicine students will still have access to all regularly available mental health resources provided by the University in addition to on-location support.
