Biography

Sindi Bebeziqi

After completing my studies in mathematics and statistics at the University of Guelph, I returned to pursue yet another passion: biomedical science. As a research and teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, I enjoyed developing my problem solving and communication skills. My experiences did not stop there – spending a year in our top-notch cadaver-based human anatomy lab was the absolute highlight of my undergrad journey, particularly when I was called upon to assist with a brain hemisphere dissection. It was a profound moment that deeply connected me to the mysteries of human life and consciousness.

This summer, I am excited to work with Dr. Julien Muffat in his lab at SickKids, exploring cutting-edge research in diseases like Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Autism Spectrum Disorder, through individualized brain-in-a-dish models. Using techniques like 3D cultures and CRISPR, Dr. Muffat’s lab focuses on creating individualized models from human stem cells and studying immune cell roles in these conditions. Having worked with human brain specimens, I am keen to join this lab, particularly drawn to studying autism and how these innovative models can provide new insights into such complex disorders.

I am eager to blend my quantitative background with biomedical science to contribute to our understanding of neurological conditions.
