RHSE sponsors several community building initiatives to bring together members from across Temerty Medicine
Over the next year and going forward, funding from the Office of the Vice Dean, Research and Health Science Education (RHSE) will support a range of activities across the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, with the goal of fostering connections and building relationships between prospective students, current students, trainees, alumni, and faculty.
Activities will include supports towards an alumni career symposium, a research showcase and networking event for students, faculty, and alumni, and an upgraded faculty wide recruitment fair geared towards talented undergraduate students who are considering the pursuit of graduate studies in life sciences.
Developmental Biology Alumni Symposium
The inaugural Developmental Biology Alumni Symposium: Exploring Careers Beyond Dev Bio, is scheduled for March 26, 2024 and will showcase various career paths of alumni from the developmental & stem cell biology program, hosted by the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), and the collaborative specialization in developmental biology, in Temerty Medicine. This will be an opportunity for alumni to reunite, reflect and network. It will also provide current trainees in these programs with valuable insights into potential career paths, both in academia and in industry.

Olena Zhulyn, a scientist at SickKids in developmental & stem cell biology and an assistant professor of molecular genetics in Temerty Medicine, is helping to organize and promote this event. According to Zhulyn, the symposium, “will provide 200 of our trainees with an unprecedented opportunity to connect with alumni across a variety of sectors as well as foster stronger ties between our institutions and our international alumni community.” Over 50 alumni are returning to SickKids to share their experiences with the next generations of scientists and industry experts.
Temerty Medicine Research Showcase
Later this spring, RHSE will present the second edition of the Temerty Medicine Research Showcase, which will include a keynote lecture by an award-winning scientist. This student-led initiative, taking place on June 7, 2024, provides a unique opportunity for Temerty Medicine students and trainees to share best practices, collaborate, gain valuable insight into potential career paths and network with industry experts and faculty. According to student organizers, the event was established to address the challenge of networking beyond the department-level. The Temerty Medicine Research Showcase brings together faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, alumni, students, and industry professionals from across the faculty for a day of presentations, workshops, career discovery, and networking.

Temerty Medicine Graduate Recruitment Fair
RHSE will gather the Temerty Medicine community for the annual Temerty Medicine Graduate Recruitment Fair, scheduled for October 16, 2024. As in previous years, this fair will unite prospective students with faculty, staff, current students, and alumni from across Temerty Medicine. The fair will showcase the various graduate programs offered by Temerty Medicine and provide opportunities for prospective students to ask questions about graduate school and network with the Temerty Medicine community. Last year’s event attracted over 400 prospective students to the campus.

For the first time ever, this event will be hosted at the new Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus (SRIC), Canada’s largest university-based innovation hub. This new central facility houses U of T’s world-leading biomedical experts, artificial intelligence scientists, and innovative entrepreneurs and start-ups looking to grow. SRIC was made possible thanks to a landmark $100 million gift to the university from Gerald Schwarz, founder, chair and CEO of Onex Corporation, and Heather Reisman founder, chair and CEO of Indigo.

According to Sara Sharifpoor, Director at RHSE, SRIC is an ideal location to showcase the array of graduate training programs offered at Temerty Medicine because it’s a hub that fosters collaborations across disciplines and industry. “While some of our training programs prepare our students for the industry, others focus on academic paths. Ultimately, to join Temerty Medicine is to become part of a larger community of students, trainees, academics, researchers, industry experts and entrepreneurs, all working together to solve the world’s most pressing medical challenges” Sharifpoor says. “When we come together to share our experiences, collaborate and co-create, that’s when our true potential emerges.” According to Sharifpoor, RHSE plans to continue to invest in community building events and initiatives that support trainees towards careers in academic and industry and is excited for what the upcoming year has in store.
