Dr. Helen Miliotis, recipient of a 2024 Graduate Faculty Teaching Award in Early Career Excellence in Teaching and Mentorship.

Dr. Helen Miliotis completed her doctorate at the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto. Her interest in combining her scientific training with education led her to study student development theory at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, earning a Certificate of Leadership in Higher Education before becoming faculty in the Department of Physiology.

In addition to foundational human physiology courses, Dr. Miliotis also teaches professional development to graduate students, to complement their scientific training. She has taught over a hundred doctoral students in the department and established strong mentoring relationships. Dr. Miliotis led the approval and implementation of the MHSc in Medical Physiology and serves as its inaugural Program Director. In this role, she provides students with academic and career mentorship, establishes partnerships for the program’s practicum component, and created the Physiology Meets Business mentorship program to further support student opportunities.
