About Graduate and Life Sciences Education (GLSE)
GLSE encompasses two major education activities in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine – Graduate Education and Undergraduate Education in the Life Sciences including Arts and Science and other interdivisional teaching. GLSE also oversees the activities of the Department of Teaching Labs (DTL). GLSE advocates for graduate and undergraduate students and promotes innovative education in the heart of Canada’s largest health care research hub.
The innovation of linking graduate students and undergraduate students provides new transformative opportunities in education. Linking education and research results in a greater breadth and depth in course offerings and in experiential research opportunities. Undergraduate students are more easily exposed to the innovation agenda of graduate education. Impact is felt locally by having the best research faculty available to teach and mentor undergraduates. The graduate students have greater interaction with undergraduate students which facilitates mentoring of undergraduates by graduate students. Impact is felt nationally and internationally as online learning is being developed by departments that engage in advanced research.
The GLSE portfolio facilitates programs that are of value to both graduate and undergraduate students, such as student integrity in education and research. This portfolio allows for easier linking of advanced senior undergraduate learning with graduate education. This provides the much needed depth of scholarship to prepare for many careers and for advanced education.
The Graduate enterprise in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine encompasses thirteen graduate units which offer doctoral graduate degree research and professional programs to over 2,800 graduate students. The Temerty Faculty of Medicine is the Faculty Lead for 6 Collaborative Specializations, Cardiovascular Sciences, Toxicology, Developmental Biology, Musculoskeletal Sciences, Neurosciences, Resuscitation Sciences. Undergraduate arts and science education is carried out by the 8 Basic Science Departments and the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology in the Faculty which also provide enriched mentored hands-on research opportunities.
