GSEF - Bram Appel Graduate Student Endowment Fund in Cardiology Award
To be awarded to one or more students in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto enrolled in a doctoral stream Master's or PhD program. Recipients will be determined by a review of applications submitted to the Division of Cardiology of the University of Toronto. Awards will be granted to eligible candidates on the basis of merit according to the following descending order of priority. In the first instance, a graduate student or students under the primary supervision of a member of the faculty of the Mount Sinai Hospital and University Health Network Division of Cardiology. Should no candidate be eligible in this category, in the third instance, a graduate student or students in the University of Toronto Division of Cardiology supervised at sites other than in Mount Sinai Hospital and University Health Network, but enrolled in the Eliot Phillipson Clinician Scientist Training Program, and in the fourth instance, a graduate student or students under the primary supervision of a member of the faculty of the Division of Cardiology of the University of Toronto with their primary appointment at sties other than the Mount Sinai Hospital and University Health Network. GSEF Ogden-Goldstein Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
To be awarded to one or more graduate students (Master’s or PhD) enrolled in the Department of Medicine’s Clinician Scientist Training Program studying irritable bowel disease and located at Mount Sinai Hospital. If no such candidate exists, second preference is for a student located at any Toronto Academic Health Network Hospital (TAHSN). Third preference, for a trainee in the Department of Surgery enrolled in the Surgeon Scientist Training Program (SSTP) at Mount Sinai Hospital. Fourth preference for an SSTP trainee at any TAHSN hospital.
Molecular Genetics, Department of
GSEF - David Stephen Cant Graduate Scholarship in Stem Cell Research Award
The award will be granted annually to graduate students enrolled in the Department of Molecular Genetics in the MSc or PhD program, demonstrating excellence and commitment in the area of stem cell research. A particular preference will be given to outstanding students studying neurological disorders – such as autism, macular degeneration, and/or stem cell intervention recovery for vision.
GSEF - Barbara Vivash Award in Molecular Genetics Award
The award will be made annually for the most outstanding PhD thesis in the Department of Molecular Genetics. Attention will be given to the production of a major work of scholarship that has led to a significant advance in understanding the molecular genetic mechanisms underlying an important biological or biomedical process. The awardee must have written an outstanding PhD thesis and then have conducted an equally excellent oral defence of his/her body of work. The award is presented to a graduate student in the Department of Physical Therapy who has demonstrated distinction in clinical practice and shown promise for improving the quality of care and patient outcomes. The student shows a passion for embracing a broad range of complementary therapies that considers not only the physical aspects of his/her patients but also their emotional and spiritual well being of his/her patients throughout their assessment and management. GSEF - Robert G. Matthews Cancer Research and Education Award
Each year, an award will be support a radiation therapist(s) from Princess Margaret Hospital who is enrolled in the Master of Health Science program in Medical Radiation Sciences at the University of Toronto. The purpose of this fund shall be to support innovation in the application of high tech cancer treatment by the front line worker. Speech-Language Pathology, Department of
GSEF - Chris Gandy International Outreach Award
To be awarded to graduate students in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology who are pursuing a Master in Health Science (Professional) degree. Students must agree to complete a 10-week international placement in a development country or at a site that offers comparable professional and cultural experience in northern Canada during Unit 9 - SLP 2500Y - Advanced Internship in their final year of study. The selection of this placement is informed by the following criteria:
- Students are exposed to a different culture than typically found in a Southern Ontario urban or rural community;
- The community served at this placement shows evidence of high and diverse needs related to communication, swallowing and hearing disorders;
- The placement site(s) are characterized by a systemic lack of accessible resources available to the community in need (due to, for example, remote location, lack of funding, lack of qualified professional care, lack of supportive technology);
- Students are not exposed to high or unacceptable levels of risk to personal safety and well-being;
- Students will be supervised by qualified and licensed speech-language pathologists who have been vetted as such by the Department;
- The site coordinator(s) and/or administrative oversight body signed the required memorandum, of Agreement for placements with the University of Toronto and
- Placements are founded on ethics-based best practices for international clinical placements, aligning with the values of the International Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation and those of the professional of speech-language pathology.
GSEF Harmonize for Speech Fund for Graduate Scholarships in Speech Language Pathology Award
To be awarded to graduate students in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology who are pursuing a Master in Health Science (professional) degree. Students must agree to complete a 10-week international placement in a third world country during Unit 9 of their final year of study and submit a report of their placement to the Department and the donor. GSEF - Susanne and William Holland Surgeon Scientist Awards
"The Susanne and William Holland Surgeon Scientist Awards are to be awarded to graduate students enrolled in Master's or PhD programs at U of T. Awards will support MDs who are orthopaedic trainees pursuing graduate degrees in basic and applied sciences or education. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Prior recipients may be considered for renewal in future years.
First preference will be given to students directly supervised by a faculty member of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre associated with the Holland Musculoskeletal Program.
Second preference will be given to students co-supervised by a faculty member of the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, but whose main supervisor may be an orthopaedic surgery faculty member at another institution.

GSEF - Lawson Family Graduate Scholarships
"The fellowships are to be awarded to post-graduate fellows in orthopaedic surgery who hold a MD, Master's or PhD degree. For the Lawson Family Post-Graduate and Graduate Fellowships (Fund 1), post-graduate fellows in orthopaedic surgery must also be enrolled in a U of T graduate degree program (Master's or PhD). For both funds, recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic merit. Prior recipients may be considered for renewal in future years.
