Richie Jeremian - Institute of Medical Science

Richi JeremianPhD candidate
Country of Origin: Toronto, Ontario
Pre-MSC/PhD Education: Human Biology/Health and Disease, University of Toronto

Recent Research Experience:
Genetics, epigenetics, neuropsychiatry, lactose intolerance, mouse model

Current Research:
My doctoral research focuses on epigenetic studies of human disease - I am currently investigating lactose intolerance as a genetic and epigenetic model of human health and disease. The discovery and understanding of the synergistic mechanisms which contribute to the age-related decrease in intestinal lactase levels in most people will contribute to the understanding of how such mechanisms impact the risk, development and course of complex genetic disorders, such as schizophrenia, autism and cancer.

Why Faculty of Medicine?
The University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine is an expansive network of interdisciplinary research - there's something for everyone! The tight-knit academic community, world-renowned faculty members, access to the best facilities, and active student life make for a well-rounded and highly fulfilling graduate education.

Future Education Plans and/or Career Goals:
My experience at the Faculty of Medicine has opened me up to the world of academia, and kindled a passion for my topic of study. Although I am still deciding on a course after graduate school, I hope to stay close to epigenetics research, and contribute to scientific discovery, be it in medicine, industry or beyond.
