Nikhil Bhagwat - Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering

Nikhil BhagwatPhD Candidate
Country of Origin:
Pune, India
Pre-MSc/PhD Education: Master’s Science in Electrical Engineering, George Mason University, Fairfax, USA. Two-years of work experience in Signal Processing and Communication Networks.

Recent Research Experience:
I work on algorithm development in the domain of computational neuroscience.  Specifically, I am interested in the development of machine-learning techniques towards the field of neuroimaging for novel diagnostic and prognostic applications.

Current Research:
My current research comprises two main initiatives. First, I am working on image segmentation pipelines for delineation of neuroanatomical structures. Second, I am working on deep-learning (machine-learning) methods for biomarker identification and development diagnostic application for neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Why Faculty of Medicine?
The faculty of medicine offers tremendous range of resources comprising distinguished faculty members, as well as, state-of-art facilities in the heart of downtown Toronto. The hospital and laboratory resources enable us to conduct large-scale clinical studies and provide access to the high-performance computing facilities, which is critical for analyzing high-dimensional “big data” in this field. The interdisciplinary faculty and principal investigators foster highly collaborative and innovative research, as well as build strong peer networks – which opens doors for exciting career paths in industry and academia.

Future Education Plans and/or Career Goals:
Further research in the development of diagnostic and prognostic applications for neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders.
