Leave of Absence Stipendiary Fund
Faculty of Medicine

For research-stream graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine, the Leave of Absence Stipendiary Fund is available for a one-term Leave of Absence (LOA) due to health issues (i.e. physical and/or mental health challenges) which temporarily impairs a student’s functioning in his/her graduate studies and for parental leave. Funding is available up to $5,000 per student for one term on a one-time only basis.

Students must apply to this fund directly via the Office of Graduate and Life Sciences Education in the Faculty of Medicine before the deadline below and prior to the term they will start their leave (i.e. apply for an LOA starting Fall 2017, you must submit your application by Monday August 14, 2017.
 

Anticipate taking a LOA in Deadline to Apply
Summer (May – August 2017) Monday April 17, 2017
Fall (September – December 2017) Monday August 14, 2017
Winter (January 2018 – April 2018) Monday December 11, 2017

To apply for the LOA Stipendiary Fund, students will be asked to submit the following package to the Office of Graduate and Life Sciences Education in a sealed envelope marked LOA Stipendiary Fund, Confidential:  

  • Copy of a completed School of Graduate Studies Leave of Absence form; please complete Section 1 and ensure Section 2 is completed by your Graduate Coordinator/Chair; Section 3 can remain blank
  • One page letter explaining the reason(s) for the LOA and how it has impaired your ability to function in your graduate program; please address the letter to the LOA Stipendiary Fund Committee
  • Identification of your supervisor and your preferred graduate coordinator (as well as your Chair)  who will be notified if your application for leave is granted
  • For those taking a LOA due to health issues, please include a physician’s note specifically outlining the physical and mental health issues that impair your functioning in your graduate program.  

Please note this fund will not count towards a student’s stipend package upon returning to his/her graduate program.  This fund is not renewable and can only be received once.  It is intended to provide financial support to the recipient for one term to student who will not recieve funding from scholarship or awards.
