Kyle Diab, Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy

Kyle DiabStudent’s Name:  Kyle Diab
Country of Origin:  Toronto, ON, Canada
Pre-MSc/PhD Education:  BSc in Honours Kinesiology, McMaster University
MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences, University of British Columbia

Recent Research Experience
I completed an Undergraduate Thesis to study the effects of weekly group exercise on strength and quality of life in people with multiple sclerosis. The objective of my Master's Thesis was to evaluate a self report questionnaire (named the Comprehensive Fatigue Assessment Battery for Spinal Cord Injury - CFAB-SCI) that examines fatigue and the factors of fatigue in people spinal cord injury. Other volunteer and work experiences were also related to research with neurological populations.

Current Research
The research projects for the MScOT program have not yet been determined. I am interested in research regarding neurorehabilitation, but I am hoping to expand my scope and conduct research on a more novel topic.

Why Faculty of Medicine?
I have had a lifelong passion for science, and more specifically the human body. Additionally, as cliché as it sounds, I have always wanted to help people. The Faculty of Medicine allows me to further explore human science and contribute to the knowledge base, while simultaneously being able to create a tangible impact that may benefit people in the future. I chose the Faculty of Medicine because it provides me an opportunity to make a contribution and advance medicine and health care, which leads to more positive outcomes for patients and their families.

Future Education Plans and/or Career Goals
My immediate plan as a graduate is to practice clinically as an occupational therapist. I have learned a lot in this MScOT program, and I am excited to apply it in my future career. I am interested in working with neurological populations, but I am open to exploring other areas of practice in my upcoming fieldwork experiences. After gaining relevant clinical experience, I will consider returning to academia to complete a PhD. I appreciate the importance of research to advance occupational therapy practice, and I believe clinical experience will provide me with the appropriate tools to conduct my future research more effectively.
