Joseph JamnikPhD Candidate
Country of Origin: Toronto, Ontario Canada
Pre-MSc/PhD Education: Biology/Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto

Recent Research Experience:
Proteomics, Genomics, and Gene-Diet Interactions

Current Research:
I am currently a PhD student in the Department of Nutritional Sciences. I am a member of Dr. Ahmed El-Sohemy's lab and my project applies proteomics and genomics approaches to study the physiological effects of gluten.  I have always had a keen interest in genomics research, and I have been fortunate to work on a number of projects over the past three years that utilize genome-wide techniques to identify novel variants that mediate individuals' responses to certain dietary factors.

Why Faculty of Medicine?
I chose to pursue graduate studies in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto because it is recognised as one of the top institutions in the world in terms of research productivity, impact and excellence. The University’s partnership with major hospitals in the Greater Toronto Area have allowed me to work closely with many world-renowned physician scientists in my field of study. Also, the Department of Nutritional Sciences at UofT is one of only a few nutrition departments in North America to be situated within a Faculty of Medicine. This enables the department to excel in research involving basic and clinical nutrition related to human health and chronic disease.

Future Education Plans and/or Career Goals:
My experience as a graduate student in the Faculty of Medicine has fueled my interest in research and innovation in the health sciences. I have also developed a passion for applying this knowledge gained through research to help individuals in the community. Upon completion of my PhD, I would like to attend medical school to further expand on my education in human physiology and disease progression.
